Preferred way to build your lexicon

RANDOM.ORG Etymonline
  1. RANDOM.ORG offers true random numbers to anyone on the Internet.
This isn't exactly a preferred way but rather the way that seems to be working out for me right now. I usually pick 1-3 languages to base the conlang's lexicon off of. For Elvish, it's Old Norse/Icelandic. For Kalti, it's Korean/Japanese/Chinese. For Kháù (Ancient Avian), it's Kurdish (this was rather arbitrary … it's only because it's a circumpositional language like Kháù). I use Google Translate to translate the word in question, as well as some synonyms. If I don't like any of the results, I head over to etymonline.com to find the English etymology of the word in question and use that as inspiration for the etymology of the word I want to translate. If I don't like any of that, I pick a syllable count and use random.org to randomly select consonants and vowels for each syllable, then fudge it until I get something that gives off the vibes of the word in question.
