As for where to play online, roll20 is the big one. it's free and has a charactermancer to build your character sheet. It has in-built voice/video (can be turned off) but I've usually played with voice over discord and maps on roll20. I've also played on foundry but, while it's free for players, the dm needs to purchase the software. it's also more graphics-intensive and personally I find it less intuitive. Roll20 also has forums to find games, while foundry doesn't.
