Is there an online version of DnD?

Owlbear Rodeo D&D Beyond
  1. Owlbear Rodeo is an attempt to make a web app to run tabletop encounters without the complicated setup process needed for other VTTs.
There is the game D&D Online, it's an MMO and probably not what you're looking for. As others mentioned there are a number of VTTs available to play online. Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, Tabletop Simulator, owlbear.rodeo, FoundryVTT all can play D&D with different capabilities and costs, and there are a number of others besides these as well.

  2. Official online toolset for Dungeons & Dragons tabletop gaming
Finally, to get started yourself, you can either purchase the Player's Handbook, (online via dndbeyond.com, direct from some of the aforementioned VTTs or through whichever bookstore you like) or download and read the free SRD, which contains all the rules required to run the game here although with a minimum number of options and in a generally less friendly format. That's really all you need to get going so long as you have others to play with.
