Aether is a peer-to-peer program with mod elections. Interestingly enough, mods you don't vote for don't affect what you see. So if a mod you didn't vote for deletes a thread or post, you'll still see it allowing for a sort of choose-your-own content aggregation. One other cool thing is that any sub, post, or comment that hasn't been interacted with in 6 months disappears from the network. You can change the settings for this, but the default is 6 months before that data is deleted from your computer.

Making social media free, federated and fun!
The Fediverse is the place to go if you want an alternative to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. It's a group of decentralized, federated social media platforms/protocols. You can self-host your own "instance", and have it federate with all other instances (or choose to blacklist/whitelist specific servers). This not only lets you have total control over your data, but it also prevents censorship as well as one corporation having control over everything.
