What we know so far about the VoIP.ms outage (Keep all discussion in this post please)

VoIP.ms Bandwidth SignalWire
  1. VoIP.ms is a VoIP origination and termination tool.
The only reason voip.ms is down is because the hackers just so happen to have picked them. Whatever else they might have chosen to target, would have come down the same way. There isn't much a company can do, because it's been a problem in the making. The nature of the internet, and a product, MikroTik in this case, having 100s of 1000s of routers across the internets, that are exploitable. Could have been TP-Link, tons of them out there also, or whatever other flavor. A quantity on the internet that can be assimilated into a Borg like botnet, after which the hackers can start issues mass attacks on whatever they please. It's not a new thing. Just that it is starting to hit closer to home now. So, new defense mechanisms need to be devised, something more creative than what's been done so far. I don't think it's fair to make it seem that it's voip.ms fault for not being able to fend it off. There was no way to "test" against such an attack. Weird that the hackers find voip.ms such a worthy target. It's not all *that* of a large operation. The markup on their product is razor thing. The hackers want milllions in ransom. Can't happen, because there probably is no such stash of cash. I say voip.ms needs to stand their ground, and get creative. I envision someone devising an iptables patch. This would benefit the world, and might save the next company from those shenanigans.

  2. Bandwidth offers SIP trunking, Emergency communications, and Voice & Messaging APIs.
The problem is their call forwarding option still relies on the call data being sent from their upstream provider to their POP servers, which are being hit with this attack. They need to start pushing the call forwarding option to the upstream provider so they don't need to hit their servers at all. I'm not sure all of their upstream providers but bandwidth.com is one of them and this could be handled via their API, if they desired to.

Luckily we have our own FreePBX so we just set up a new Trunk with signalwire.com, and I was able to get the number verified. Then we put a note on our website to call the temporary number.
