You host the files on a git server (a Github respository is the most common choice, but many alternatives exist, and self-hosting is absolutely possible as well). User can 'pull' from the server to sync their local copy with the most up-to-date version, work on it for a bit, and then 'commit' and 'push' to sync the server with the changes they made locally.
