Do ad-supported charitable sites do more harm than good?

Tab for a Cause Freerice.com
  1. Raise money for charity with each new tab you open
    Pricing:
    • Open Source
There are many sites such as freerice.com (play games with ads and the ad revenue goes to buy food for starving people) and Tab for a Cause (ads on your new tab page) that show ads and donate the resulting money to charity. But I'm wondering if the positive impact from this miniscule amount of money raised is outweighed by the negative impact on the environment caused by the consumerism these ads cause.
