Self-hosting VPN is not that difficult. There are a lot of great how-to articles for doing that. If you are intimidated by working with command line all the time, you can look into OpenVPN Access Server that gives you a nice GUI to configure and run the VPN server (first two user profiles are free I believe). There is also Pritunl which is probably a bit more complex for simple use cases. If you don't have experience self-hosting, I would start hosting with a cloud provider (since it is an isolated environment). After you are confident in what you are doing and learn your way around things, then you can start self-hosting at your house.
