So im starting to run out of space for physical books so I got an old kindle to try. My question is why are ebooks so expensive?

Hey, I don't have solutions (if I had, do you think I would be here discussing on Reddit?), but I think focusing everything on prices is the wrong thing to do. Just taking your MacArthur book as an example: you complain about the $40 price for a digital download. Fine. Someone may rightly suggest you get it for free from the library (if you just check Wikipedia, it points to archive.org where you can borrow it right now for free totally legally if you really want to spare $40, how much is this suggestion worth to you? Nothing, or probably just a "stupid" upvote, while you probably will complain about pagination that doesn't fit nicely into your kindle/kobo and reading on computer screen is tiring for the eyes... see? What we wouldn't do for convenience... My problem is that we don't even pay Amazon to do that since they automated everything and the author is a simple cog in the machine), or you could have that book literally for pennies at a charity shop (but for convenience again, most people prefer two clicks on a screen to get a physical book for $4 from Abebooks when it costs 40 pennies from the shop at the corner...).

Standard Ebooks

I refuse to buy the eBook if its more expensive than the paperback. But Project Gutenberg, Standard eBooks, and volunteer read content at LibriVox has got so much free content that I hardly buy paperbacks unless its a gift, or as I take my kiddo book shopping something catches my fancy. There's about 5,000 years of free content, get wrecked pay-to-read ebooks.
